The Bahama Islands are easy to enter. You will need proof of U.S. citizenship in the form of a passport. A driver's license or Birth Certificate is NOT acceptable. When leaving the Bahamas, you will be required to pay a small "departure tax. Major Airlines include the departure tax in the purchase of a round trip ticket."
Credit cards and Traveler's Checks are widely accepted. Personal checks are not. Canadian dollars must be converted. Normal banking hours are 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday...and until 5:00 p.m. on Fridays. Banks are closed on weekends and public holidays. Rentals cars are not recommended in Treasure Cay, but if you MUST rent, be sure to purchase all available insurance to avoid costly consequences. Usually, your U.S. auto insurance will not cover you while driving in the Bahamas. Motor scooters are the number one cause of injury to tourists. Local drivers generally do NOT respect bicycles. We strongly recommend "taxis," which are readily available and very inexpensive. Rates are standardized and occasionally negotiable. Most drivers, at your request, will make stops at the grocery or liquor store. Taxi drivers are invaluable sources of information. A 15% gratuity is customary.
Be sure to bring an adequate supply of prescription medication since everything is more expensive in the islands. There are hospitals in Freeport and Nassau. | ||
