Things To Bring for Bahamas vacations, yacht charters, Sailing holidays cruising the Abacos

You won't need much more than the essentials on your charter vacation. Most first-time visitors bring more than they need, especially clothing. Here are some suggestions:

CLOTHING
Bahamas vacations, yacht charters, Sailing holidays cruising the AbacosSeveral bathing suits, 3 or 4 pairs of shorts and T-shirts, one sweatshirt or sweater, one pair of jeans, boat shoes or sneakers. A full-length cover-up (such as a robe). One dress-up outfit (to wear on the plane). Pack everything in collapsible bags or duffels. Suitcases are hard to stow on a sailboat.

EQUIPMENT
Personal toilet articles and lots of sun protection--sunglasses, hat and sun block (SP24 or higher). Bring your favorite CDs, the boat has a player. A camera, plenty of film and Snorkel gear.

FOOD

In season, there will be no shortage of fresh fish, lobster and conch, but you will need other essentials plus whatever special dietary needs you may have.

Treasure Cay has a large supermarket stocked with most of the products you are accustomed to buying in the states -- but at a much greater price. Things that are easy to put in your bag and bring along are coffee, tea, oatmeal, bar soap, snacks, microwave popcorn, Crystal Light, lemonade mix, just about anything that won't break or melt.

Some folks like to bring a small cooler with perishable items. Customs will seize incoming citrus.

A word about liquor. If you enjoy rum, you have found heaven. Rum is cheap and very, very good. Most liquor is less expensive than in the US. Almost everything else is terribly expensive. The cheapest case of beer will cost at least $35.

TRAVEL DOCUMENTS
Identification is required at most locations. You will need a passport to enter the Bahamas.

WHAT NOT TO BRING
Leave your expensive jewelry at home. Firearms and illegal drugs are prohibited. All craft are subject to search by the U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Customs. They are experts at finding contraband. Don't take a chance.
